Tuition and Courses

Many fly anglers begin their careers by teaching themselves or by being taught by friends. This really is not the best way to start. Bad habits not only undermine your true potential as a caster, but can be extremely difficult to cure once established. A few hours of tuition from a qualified instructor really is worth the modest outlay. You will make much faster progress, enjoy your fishing more, decrease frustration and not waste money on day tickets before you are ready to fish effectively. So learn to enjoy your fishing more quickly!

Beginners Courses

Beginners Courses

I am very aware of the fact that newcomers to fly-fishing need careful and sympathetic tuition. Half day and full day beginners sessions are devised specially to meet your needs. They are generally taught on a one-to-one basis, though small groups can be accommodated.

Half Day Course

Choosing suitable equipment
  • Professional advice on choosing the right combination of rod reels and line to meet your needs.
  • The emphasis is on quality and value for money.
The basic fly casting skills
  • The roll cast.
  • The overhead cast.
Tackle assembly and knots
  • How to assemble equipment correctly and safely.
  • A few basic knots to get you started.

Full Day Courses

The half-day programme is completed in the morning. Following a break for lunch, the afternoon is spent fishing for rainbow trout. Casting skills can be refined whilst practical fishing skills are introduced

Fly Casting Tuition

Fly Casting Tuition

Most accomplished anglers readily acknowledge that the ability to cast proficiently is absolutely essential. An effective caster does so with complete ease and without exertion. The method taught allows for long and accurate casts with the minimum of effort. Sadly, many unqualified instructors simply pass on their own short-comings to their pupils. Life is too short NOT to learn properly!

Basic Skills

Roll Casting
Often overlooked, but vital to the all-round fly fisher. It is the basis of some advanced techniques.

Overhead Casting
The essential basic cast for all to master.

Improvers are Taught
Shooting line, False casting, Combination Casts.

Advanced Skills

When the roll and overhead cast are mastered, learn:
  • Hauling techniques
  • Casting with Shooting heads
  • Jump Roll and Spey Casts
  • Presentation Casts
  • How to improve accuracy
  • Changes of Direction
  • Coping with windy conditions
  • Advanced presentation casts
